Religious

Buddhism

There are two ways in respecting Buddhism, Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism. The word Theravada means “small vehicle” which is practiced in Cambodia. Mahayana means “big vehicle” which can carry a larger group of people. Mahayana is very much harder to follow than Theravada because there are many strict rules and regulation so not many people can reach the final goal of learning Mahayana. Theravada was lately born with many rules and regulations were adjusted for many people prefer following Theravada than Mahayana. The final goal of Theravada is to reach Nirvana for reincarnation.
Nowaday the state religious of Cambodia is Buddhism.
Hinduism
Hinduism is the first religion came to Cambodia since the very first century until 14 century. Till now some people still follow Hinduism. During Pre-Angkorean period Hinduism was state religion which was followed by majority group of people
Islam (Muslim)
Muslim was never been Cambodian state religion at all. This religion came to Cambodia by migration of Chams when the kingdom of Champa was defeated by Vietnam.
Christianity
Christianity was introduced to Cambodia by western people. It is a mission of westerners to spread Christianity in Cambodia. Today there are some churches in Phnom Penh and some other parts of Cambodia. During the last decade, there is an increase of Christianity followers in Cambodia. Christianity charities have helped Cambodia very much in rescuing poor people, especially young people and widowers.
